“Make Waves” conference to take place in St. Petersburg, Fla., May 14 – 18, 2014

TAMPA, Fla. (November 1, 2013) Card Services for Credit Unions® announces Captain Richard Phillips , the real-life inspiration for the movie “Captain Phillips,” starring Tom Hanks, will serve as a keynote speaker for its 2014 Solutions Conference, to be held at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in St. Petersburg, Fla., May 14 - 18, 2014. Credit union executives and industry experts will share best practices with Card Services for Credit Unions® members, with Phillips’ keynote speech taking place May 17.

The ship hijacking and capture of Captain Richard Phillips by Somali pirates in April 2009 marked the first hijacking of a U.S. ship in more than 200 years. Phillips will discuss his heroic experience and remarkable rescue after five days of capture, which is recounted on the big screen and in Phillips’ book, “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea.”

“Each year, members walk away from the Solutions Conference fueled with motivation and best practices to improve upon their current operations,” said Robert Hackney, president of Card Services for Credit Unions®. “We are honored to have Captain Phillips, whose courage has been publicly recognized by the president, share his own experiences and motivation with our conference attendees.”
