Card Services for Credit Unions® Releases Debit Research Brief

Tampa, FL (August 14, 2012) - Card Services for Credit Unions® announces the release of a research brief to inform credit unions of the importance of supporting and growing debit card portfolios to building stronger member relationships and increasing profitability.

The study found that as more members migrate to debit cards, credit union efficiency goes up, transaction costs go down, and more interchange income is generated. As an example, if a credit union processes a total of 400,000 check, ACH and ATM transactions every year, migrating 25 percent of these transactions to debit provides a total annual benefit of $76,100.

Optimizing the debit card program includes more than just encouraging debit card usage. It also includes: member education, promoting all forms of debit payment (signature, PIN, recurring bill pay, etc), replacing ATM cards by promoting ease of cash back at point of sale, issuing debit cards with every new checking account and creating a debit rewards program.
